Taylor Hill Interview

Interview: Taylor Hill Talks Acne, Fragrance, and Those Makeup-Free Selfies

Published: JANUARY 23, 2019

Source: www.allure.com

Allure: How would you describe the story of your life with scent?

Taylor Hill: “The scent that reminds me most of my childhood is pine because Colorado has a lot of evergreen pine trees. And then also there’s a specific smell in the air that I can smell and know that it’s going to snow.”

Allure: Wait! What’s THAT smell?

T. H.: “I swear. I have a gift… I can tell things that are going to happen by the way the air is. I can tell if it’s going to snow soon.”

Allure: Is it like a dry or metallic smell?

T. H.: “No, it’s just the way that it’s in your nose. It’s really specific, I don’t even know how to describe it. But it is a certain smell. Like it snowed here in New York, and two days before that I was shooting and it was so cold, and I inhaled and I was like, ‘It’s going to snow soon.’ And then the next day, it started snowing on the set. And I was like, ‘I knew it!’ ”

Allure: What’s been the scent of your life over the last few years?

T. H.: “Laundry detergent. And candles. My favorite candle is the black Diptyque one — Baies. I love that one. And then Romance, because we shot and filmed the campaign over four days. And it was a very present scent in the process of filming, and now it’s a really authentic memory and scent in my life.”

Allure: Do you have memories of Romance from growing up? The formula hasn’t changed …

T. H.: “No.”

Allure: …since 1998.

T. H.: “The thing for me is because I was born in 1996, it’s almost as old as I am. And because of where I’m from, we don’t really know brands. It’s one of those things where I smelled it and I’m like, ‘That’s so familiar, what is that?’ Because we just didn’t know. It was around, it was there, but it was something that we wouldn’t have known about, just because I’m from such like a small, funny little town.”

Allure: What is your favorite fragrance application technique?

T. H.: “The one I use day to day is to spray it in the air and walk through it. And then for events, I’ll add a little bit more just so it’ll last longer. I do the wrist and behind the ears, the activation points, so movement activates the scent.”

Allure: What’s your most significant fragrance memory?

T. H.: “A lot of my scent and fragrance memories are food related. My mom bakes for holidays and she’s a really great baker. She makes really good fudge, cookies, homemade blueberry pie, pumpkin pie. A lot of my early scent memories just bring back positive food-related memories with my family.”

Allure: Do you bake on your own now?

T. H.: “I’m terrible. I am so bad at it. I’m getting better at cooking, but baking is science. And I have terrible time-management skills. I need to get way better at that in my life.”

Allure: You have the most gorgeous makeup-free selfies. Did you know that they were going to be so powerful and reinforcing for women who have acne when you posted them? Did you have a sense of what you were doing or was it a happy coincidence?

T. H.: “No, it was just a coincidence. Honestly, I didn’t even pay attention to it. I didn’t even notice. For the first one, I was like, ‘Oh, lots of good light!’ And then I just posted it, and then everyone was like, ‘Oh, my God! Thank you for this.’ And I was like, ‘What are you all talking about? Oh. Yeah, I guess I do have a zit right there; that’s true.’ ”

Allure: What’s your relationship with your skin?

T. H.: “I have ups and downs. I struggle with acne and I’ve struggled for a long time, probably since I was 15, because of makeup, travel, and hormones. I get my really bad breakouts around my period. For me, what really helped is that I do what I can and I take care of my skin. I work at it. And if I still break out, what am I going to do? I wash my face before I go to bed. I get facials and I see a dermatologist. But if it’s still happening then I just have to embrace it and let it do its thing because it’s a part of life.”

Allure: What kind of facials do you like?

T. H.:“I really like the Clear and Brilliant laser. I see Dr. Diamond in Los Angeles; he’s really good. I have very sensitive skin and I keep the products to a minimum. I like the laser because it’s not a product and I think it does the deepest healing. It’s under the skin, cleaning you out, not just on the surface. I feel I get the best results from being diligent about the laser.”

Allure: Now that you’ve seen the reaction to your Instagram makeup-free selfies, is that something you want to keep doing a little more purposefully?

T. H.: “Totally. I mean, I had no idea it would get a positive, crazy response. I didn’t mean to do it; it was an accident. I think it’s so important to share that realness and that part of my life because I’m a human being. I’m a girl and it’s not easy being a woman. We go through a lot, and I think it’s cool to just make sure people know that. I’m young. I’m 22 and I’m going to speak to the even-younger girls because I was there when I was 16. And we didn’t have somebody to be real with us. Everybody’s retouching their images like crazy and it’s not really fair to the girls. I’m not perfect and I don’t try to be. So I think it’s important to express that.”
