Spencer Locke Interview
Interview with Spencer Locke from Tarzan
Kidzworld: How’s it going?
Spencer: Great, I’m good!
Kidzworld: Did you know the story of Tarzan beforehand, did you grow up with it?
Spencer: Oh yes, how can you avoid the story of Tarzan? Jane is this kick a** girl in the jungle with a beautiful man by her side…like a princess.
Kidzworld: What makes this animated version of Tarzan different than the others?
Spencer: This one takes place today, we have a lot of high tech businesspeople fighting to take over the jungle, so it’s an updated Tarzan story, but still a classic tale with romance and animals and Tarzan growing up in the jungle. Those things are all still similar to new elements.
Kidzworld: Can you describe Jane Porter for us? What do you like about her?
Spencer: My jane is quite the go-getter, I grew up with my father living in the jungle and working in a camp, and also growing up in New York City, she’s a city girl with a love for the environment. She’s someone who stands strong protecting the environment, when the time comes to fight the bad guys she’s a worthy opponent and it’s a sweet love story too. She’s certainly not into New York City guys, Tarzan’s pure of heart. I love playing that – I want to be more like Jane!
Kidzworld: You’ve also worked on other animated films, can you tell us what it’s like?
Spencer: It was motion capture! A lot of people don’t realize that. So we performed the scenes like any other film, we were in a studio 9-5, we were wearing bodysuits and head cameras, like in Avatar. We got to do it all!
Kidzworld: What was it like seeing yourself animated?
Spencer: So cool! I had done it once before in Monster House, and to see how far technology has come in the past couple of years. it’s funny, they tried to make Jane look as much like me as possible, but it looks just like my mom! Everyone I know agreed. it’s amazing to see how much the other actor’s performances came through – I see Kellan, I see myself, I see Anton – it’s incredible how they work that magic.
Kidzworld: What are you hoping audiences take away from the film?
Spencer: I hope audiences fall in love with the characters in this classic tale, and I think it’s interesting to see a classic tale like this done today like maybe this could happen. it’s a feel-good movie and plenty of fun for kids and adults too.
Kidzworld: What’s up next for you? Anything you’d like to share with us?
Spencer: I recently finished filming a movie called Click, in the beautiful countryside of Georgia. We were hiking around all day, it was intense, it was a thriller and a real stretch for me emotionally and physically, and now I’m just enjoying the LA summer!
