Snoop Dogg is an American rapper and actor who was born as Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. on October 20, 1971 in Long Beach, California. His music career began in 1992 when he was discovered by Dr. Dre and featured on Dre’s solo debut, “Deep Cover”, and then on Dre’s solo debut album, The Chronic. He has since sold over 23 million albums in the United States and 35 million albums worldwide.
Snoop Dogg was named after his stepfather, Calvin Cordozar Broadus Sr. and his mother is Beverly Broadus. His real father, Vernell Vernado, was a Vietnam veteran, singer and mail carrier who wasnt always there for him. He was nicknamed snoopy because of his appearance early in his life. His mother and stepfather Calvin divorced in 1975. He started singing and playing the piano at Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church and in 6th grade, he started rapping.
As a teen, he was a member of the Rolling 20 crips gang in the eastside ares of long beach and this would get him into trouble with the law most of the time. He was arrested for being in possession of cocaine after graduating highschool and was frequently in and out of prison for the following three years.
With his cousins Nate Dogg and Lil’ ½ Dead and friend Warren G, Snoop recorded homemade tapes as a group called 213, named after the Long Beach area code. One of his early solo freestyles over En Vogue’s “Hold On” made it to a mixtape that was heard by influential producer Dr. Dre, who called to invite him to an audition. Former N.W.A associate The D.O.C. taught him how to structure his lyrics and separate the thematics into verses, hooks, and chorus.

From an early age, he had a keen interest in singing, rapping and playing piano.Snoop’s music career began in 1992 when he was discovered by Dr. Dre of N.W.A, and as a result Snoop was featured on Dre’s solo debut, Deep Cover.
Broadus Jr. made his stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg soon as he started recording with Dr.Dre. Snoop Doggy Dogg then collaborated with fellow rap artist Tupac Shakur in the 1996 single 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted a song that would turn out to be one of Shakur’s last songs while alive as he was shot 6 days later.
In 2004, Snoop signed to Geffen Records/Star Trak Entertainment which produced several tracks for Snoop’s 2004 release R&G -Rhythm & Gangsta: The Masterpiece. He also had various supporting and cameo roles in several films including ‘Half Baked’ released in 1998, ‘Training Day’ in 2001, ‘Starsky & Hutch’ from 2004 and ‘Brüno’ which was released in 2009.
