Ruth E. Carter Biography
Ruth E. Carter is an American costume designer for film and Television. Her works can be seen in several films. She is very skilled in creating the appearances of different characters. Over the years, she has earned three nominations to the Academy Awards for Best Costume Design for Malcolm X in 1992, Amistad in 1997 and Black Panther in 2018 and an Emmy nomination for ROOTS in 2016.
Over her near 30-year career, she has mastered the look of multiple periods and genres in envisioning the clothing and overall appearance of a character or performer.

She began her career as an intern in her hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts and at the Santa Fe Opera. She then moved to Los Angeles and began working at the Los Angeles Theater Center. Here she met director Spike Lee with whom she worked with, in a number of films including School Daze, Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Oldboy, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, and Chi-Raq.
Apart from Lee, she has worked with other directors like Steven Spielberg and dressed other actors, like Denzel Washington, and actresses, like Angela Basset. Her works can also be found in What’s Love Got to Do with It, Serenity, Four Brothers, Sparkle, The Butler, and Selma. He most recent work is on the BET networks drama series Being Mary Jane and Marvel’s Black Panther.
