Richard Engel Biography
Richard Engel is an American journalist and author who is current NBC News chief foreign correspondent. He was assigned to that position on April 18, 2008, after being the network’s Middle East correspondent and Beirut Bureau chief. Engel was the first broadcast journalist recipient of the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism for his report War Zone Diary.
He speaks and reads Arabic fluently and is also fluent in Italian and Spanish. Engel wrote the book A Fist in the Hornet’s Nest, published in 2004, about his experience covering the Iraq War from Baghdad. His newest book, And Then All Hell Broke Loose, published in 2016, is about his two decade career in the Middle East as a freelance reporter.

Richard started working as a freelance reporter in Cairo to make a big name for himself. He continued as a freelance reporter in Cairo for more than four years. Due to his patience and hard work, he landed a job of Middle East correspondent for WGBH radio station. Eventually, he worked as a correspondent for two years starting from 2001 till he left in 2003.
Moreover, also worked as a news reporter for ‘USA Today’. At the same time, he served as a freelance journalist for ABC News. While working there, he masterminded on covering the news of Iraq war which was at the time, an international matter of concern. Engel currently hosts the occasional MSNBC Special Series “On Assignment with Richard Engel”. MSNBC announced Wednesday it will relaunch a Sunday night series called “On Assignment with Richard Engel” hosted by the NBC News chief foreign correspondent. Engel, who has earned several awards for his reports inside war zones over the years, will kick off his series on Sunday night with a one-on-one interview with former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon.
Bannon, who also served as executive chairman of Breitbart News, recently has been critical of Pope Francis and has called for the creation of an independent tribunal to look into a myriad of scandals plaguing the Catholic church.
