Mj Lee Interview

Birthday Of The Day: Mj Lee, Cnn National Political Reporter

Updated: 03/05/2018

How/where are you celebrating your birthday and with whom? “Dinner in NYC with my husband Alex! But the real celebration for me will be at the end of the week, when we take a road trip to Zaleski, Ohio.”

How did you get your start in journalism? “Danielle Jones hired me to be a web producer at POLITICO fresh out of college. I’m grateful to her to this day.”

What’s an interesting book/article you’re reading now or finished? And why? “I’ve been carrying around ‘Pachinko’ by Min Jin Lee in my suitcase for a few weeks and can’t wait to start. No way for me not to be a fangirl of a Korean-American author getting rave reviews for a book set in Korea, and eventually Japan. (Also, I always wish I read more for leisure.)”

What is a trend going on in the U.S. or abroad that doesn’t get enough attention? “As a huge lover of dogs, rescues in particular, I worry that not enough people realize how easy it is to adopt a rescue dog even if you are looking for a more ‘popular’ or ‘trendy’ breed. A website like www.petfinder.com, for example, lets you search for rescues by breed – and there are plenty of purebreds that need homes, for those who are interested in a particular breed. The dog might have some health issues or you may have to travel to retrieve them – but they’re out there!”

How is the Trump presidency going? “‘Exhausting’ is the word I think I hear most from folks.”

What’s a fun fact that people in Washington might not know about you? “That I didn’t start learning English until I was about 8. It’s probably the reason that I’m so impressed by people who are good at puns!”
