Former Elk dancer starts a career in TV news

by Bruce Strand, a Sports editor

Meghan Reistad, former Elk River High School dancer and news anchor, has launched a television journalism career at a Rochester station.

“The best part of my job is telling stories,” Reistad told Outlook Magazine, a publication of St. Cloud State. “I love meeting people who are making a difference, and sharing what they are doing with others.”

Reistad, 23, who helped the Elk dance team placed third in the state in 2007, joined KAAL, an ABC station covering Austin and Rochester, in April, while still in school. She became full-time in May upon graduation from SCSU.

While at St. Cloud, working with the student station UTVS, she did a story about a generous, civic-minded milkman called “Giving by the Gallon” that earned her two state collegiate awards and is up for a national College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) award.

Reistad told the Star News that among her favorite subjects so far at KAAL are a 91-year-old D-Day veteran who was part of the first wave of infantry to storm Normandy Beach (“Awesome to hear his story”), an Austin program that links veteran pilots with kids to give them a chance to fly a plane (“I got to tag along for a ride in one of the single-engine planes”), and a summer camp for wheelchair-bound individuals (“Talk about inspiring!”).

Asked about career goals, Reistad said, “I really would like to eventually work for one of the Twin Cities stations; they are big markets and it’s close to home.”

Reistad was a sophomore when the ERDT took third at state in high-kick in 2007. She helped them reach state her junior and senior years as well.

She was an anchor of the school’s closed-circuit TV, weekly news program, getting an early start in her career of choice.

While at SCSU, she had an internship at a Florida station in 2012 and helped out with local coverage of the presidential election. She also interned in Duluth in 2013.

Reistad has stayed in dance team as a coach. She assisted her former teammate Melissa Bast with Elk River this past and will join the staff at Faribault, one of the state’s top programs, next year.
