Mario Lopez born Mario Lopez Jr is an American television Host and actor. He has made numerous appearances in television series, films and on Broadway. Best known to portray A.C. Slater on Saved by the Bell.
He has appeared in many projects since including the third season of Dancing with the Stars and as host for the syndicated entertainment news magazine show Extra. Also hosted America’s Best Dance Crew for MTV. He co-hosted the second season of American Version of The X Factor with Khloe Kardashian, and he was the sole host for third and final season.

Lopez was discovered by a talent agent when he was 10 years at his dance recital, and got into local ads and commercials before appearing on the TV screen.
Lopez began acting in 1984, when he appeared as younger brother Tomás in a comedy series a.k.a. Pablo. That same year, he was cast as a drummer and dancer on Kids Incorporated from three seasons. In March 1987, he was cast as a guest star on the sitcom The Golden Girls as a Latino boy named Mario who faces deportation. He was cast in a small part in the movie Colors as Felipe’s friend. In 1989, Lopez was cast as A.C. Slater in the television Saturday-morning series sitcom Saved by the Bell, a role which lasted five years.
In 1997, Lopez played the role as Olympic diver Greg Louganis in the movie Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story. The following year, he was cast as Bobby Cruz in the series Pacific Blue. Lopez left the series after two seasons and went on to guest star on Resurrection Blvd., Eve, and The Bad Girl’s Guide. In March 2006, Lopez joined the cast of the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful playing the role of Dr. Christian Ramirez. On July 18, 2006, he was released from his B&B contract. Later that year, Mario guest-starred as a plastic surgeon who drives Christian Troy to jealousy when he sees him naked in the shower in an episode of FX Network’s Nip/Tuck during the show’s fourth season, which began in Fall 2006. He also made an appearance on George Lopez as a police officer in late 2006. Lopez also guest-starred as a reporter for Extra Sesame Street in the Sesame Street episode “The Veggie Monster” in 2012.
Lopez and Courtney Mazza have a reality show on VH1 called Mario Lopez: Saved by the Baby which premiered on November 1, 2010.
On February 4, 2015, Lopez reunited with Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Elizabeth Berkley, Dennis Haskins and Tiffani Thiessen on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where they appeared in a Saved by the Bell sketch with Fallon.
Dancing with the Stars
In the fall of 2006, Lopez signed on as a contestant on the third season of Dancing with the Stars on ABC with professional partner and then-girlfriend Karina Smirnoff who was making her series debut. They finished in second place, losing to the team of Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke.
In 1992, he hosted his first series on NBC, titled Name Your Adventure. He hosts the serial tabloid Extra, as well as the MTV reality shows America’s Best Dance Crew and MTV’s Top Pop Group. In the 1995–96 season, he hosted the second season of Masters of the Maze on what was then The Family Channel. Lopez is both the host (with Carmen Palumbo) and co-executive producer of Sí TV’s Dating Factory. From October to December 2012, he co-hosted the Fox singing competition The X Factor along with Khloe Kardashian. In September 2013, Lopez came back to the show as sole host for season 3. The X Factor was cancelled on February 7, 2014. From 2002 to 2005, he was the host of the Animal Planet show Pet Star, despite some difficulty with an allergy to cats. Lopez hosted the Miss America pageant in 2007, 2009, and 2010.
Lopez has also guest co-hosted The Wendy Williams Show and MCed the gala benefit for the 2010 Pageant of the Masters arts festival in Laguna Beach, California.
Starting in 2012, Lopez began hosting his own nationally syndicated radio show, ON With Mario Lopez, for Premiere Radio. It streams online daily on iHeartRadio and airs on selected CHR and Hot AC stations throughout the U.S.
In August 2014, Lopez began hosting the Hot AC edition of the iHeartRadio Countdown.
Outside of TV, Lopez made his Broadway debut on April 15, 2008, in the revival of the musical A Chorus Line in the role of Zach.
Lopez has published three non-fiction books. The first, Mario Lopez Knockout Fitness, was published in 2008 and written together with Jeff O’Connell. His book Extra Lean followed in early 2010 and became a New York Times bestseller. Extra Lean Family was published in May 2012. He released a children’s book entitled Mario and Baby Gia by Celebra Children’s Books, on September 27, 2011. The book is about Lopez and his daughter.

Classic New York Gala: An Interview With Mario Lopez

Mario, tell us about your involvement in the Classic New York Gala. How did you come to be the host and why is this event and its beneficiary, the Global Unity Foundation, important to you?
Mario: The foundation represents so many great things. It’s all about helping people and raising awareness. I’ve been wanting to work with them for a long time now, and we were finally able to find a date that works with my crazy schedule. I’m happy to go to New York to lend my time and looking forward to representing the ideals of the Foundation in the best way I can.
This event is taking place in Manhattan during the same period as the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly. Humanitarian causes and aid are important elements of their dialogue. As a celebrity and someone who grew up in the public eye, how do you view your role in bringing awareness to humanitarian causes?
Mario: I’m not one to tell any individual how to lead their life. Speaking for myself, I feel a great deal of responsibility being a border town kid from Chula Vista. My parents immigrated here from Mexico. I’m a first generation American, and I feel incredibly blessed to be as successful as I am. I want to be an inspiration to other kids like me who came from similar neighborhoods. I want them to know that you too can succeed. I try to do the best I can on the community level with being involved with the Boys and Girls Clubs of America for example. We’re doing something with Robert Shapiro’s foundation called the Brent Shapiro Club, which helps kids that are battling addiction. My business partner, Oscar de la Hoya, and I are also doing charitable projects together.
The event is being backed by Gary Kong, a Chinese American self-made real estate mogul and philanthropist. Gary talks publicly about being able to immigrate here and live out the American Dream. This is obviously a hot button topic right now, but politics aside, why do you think it’s important for role models like Gary to share their success stories and give back to humanitarian causes?
Mario: Well it’s funny because I never really share my political views. My fans know how I feel and I’m a conservative guy by nature. I also don’t want to alienate any viewer. I’m in the TV business and I don’t want to give them a reason to not watch me! As you know, I do more with my actions than my words. Hearing incredible stories like Gary’s, who has a strong work ethic, has taught me that there are no shortcuts in life. If you work hard for whatever it is you want, you will eventually find some level of success. This may sound corny, but America really is the best country in the world to achieve your dreams.
The mission of the Classic New York gala is to bring together, educate, and inspire young entrepreneurs. As a father, what lessons do you hope your kids take away from seeing you involved with events and causes like this one?
Mario: Events and causes like this are very important to expose children to. One of my priorities in raising my kids is for them know that they are blessed: the circumstances they were raised in are very different from mine. I want them to know how hard it is out there for a lot of people. It’s important to give back, and I want to make sure that is a priority for them as well in their lives.
What advice do you have for young entrepreneurs or talent getting started on their dreams?
Mario: If you work hard, stay focused and do the right thing, good things will happen for you. It is important to find something that you’re passionate about or that makes you happy because that’s the thing you’re not going to mind putting long hours into. There is no magic formula. It’s about good old-fashioned hard work.
Why do you think it is so important for businesses today to include a mission-based, philanthropic component to their work?
Mario: It’s incredibly important because how else are charitable organizations going to survive or thrive? That’s why I work with the Boys and Girls clubs of America. I want to see them be successful. I have raised over a million dollars for the organization and I am looking forward to helping the Global Unity Foundation through the Classic New York Gala as well.
As talent, you have had a lot of success but also must have faced rejection and disappointment throughout points in your career. What tips do you have for our readers to stay motivated and focused on the end goal?
Mario: As an actor in the entertainment business, you hear “No” about 97% of the time. I still get rejected. You have to have thick skin and you have to understand the territory. I’m doing something I love and in the end, it’s finding something you’re passionate about that makes you happy. The rest will follow.
Where can your fans see you next? Any new projects you’d like to share with our readers?
Mario: I’m proud to say that I have been doing Extra for 10 years. The show is actually celebrating its 25th anniversary in December. I also have a nationally syndicated radio show, “On With Mario.” I also have some exciting projects that I can’t discuss quite yet, so be on the lookout!
One last question: what was it like guest hosting for Ellen?
Mario: I love Ellen! She’s one of my favorite people and I was honored that she asked me to guest host. I’m proud to say that I hold the record for the most appearances on Ellen: 30 times! I think if there were more Ellens in the world, it would be a better place.
