Linda Perry apologizes for Lady Gaga song remarks
Linda Perry has apologized for saying Lady Gaga didn’t co-write “Til It Happens to You.”
The 50-year-old singer-songwriter offered her “sincere” apologies on Twitter after claiming the 29-year-old pop star contributed only one lyric to the Oscar-nominated song.”My sincere apologies. I made a mistake to comment. I wasn’t in the room when #TIHTY was being written,” Perry wrote. “More importantly, I wish the focus to remain on the great importance of the song and the message of the film.”
The 4 Non-Blondes frontwoman had said the previous day that Diane Warren was solely responsible for “Til It Happens to You.” Lady Gaga and Warren share a Best Original Song nomination for the track, which appears in the movie The Hunting Ground.
“Why did Gaga get credit? Maybe because Diane wanted to ensure her support in promoting the song. Gaga is a very smart business woman she knew a song written by Diane Warren would be up for an Oscar,” Perry had tweeted. “I credit Diane for writing this song, it is her experience her pain her words.”
Warren responded to Perry’s remarks by tweeting “the song is the result of a special collaboration between myself and Lady Gaga.” She added the track “was inspired by the countless survivors of abuse who need our support and love so they know they’re not alone.”
The Hunting Ground is a documentary about alleged incidents of campus rape in the United States. Lady Gaga, who revealed in 2014 she was raped by a record producer at age 19, recorded “Til It Happens to You” for the film, and an accompanying PSA music video was released in September.
