He began his career in the 90s in television commercials. In 1992, he earned the lead role in This Boy’s Life after being handpicked by Robert De Niro out of 400 young actors to play the role. The film brought about his breakthrough on the big screen.

The next year, DiCaprio took up the role of a mentally challenged youth in the film ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’. he then took up the role of a young gunslinger in The Quick and the Dead and a drug addict in one of his most challenging roles to date, Jim Carroll in The Basketball Diaries in 1995.

DiCaprio starred in the film Romeo + Juliet in 1996. It is an abridged modernization of William Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy of the same name which retained the original Shakespearean dialogue. It helped establish Leonardo’s reputation as an actor and it also made Leonardo become a household name, a true movie star. He then co-starred with Kate Winslet in James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’ in 1997. It is a film on the story about the sinking of the titular ocean liner.

His role in the movie is of Jack, a poor artist who falls for the rich and beautiful Rose (Winslet) on board. DiCaprio quickly became a world-famous celebrity with a growing list of admirers, his charm and youthful good looks landing him on People magazine’s list of the “50 Most Beautiful People” in 1997 and 1998.

The following year, he made an appearance in the film Celebrity and also starred in the dual roles of the villainous King Louis XIV. After keeping a low profile for a while, DiCaprio soon bounced back. He demonstrated his range as an actor in two films from 2002, Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me if You Can and Gangs of New York.

In 2015, he partnered with Scorsese to work on the film adaptation of Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City. He also played Hugh Glass in the survival drama The Revenant that was directed by Alejandro G. The film was well-received by critics and it also earned him numerous awards, including his first win at the Academy Awards in the Best Actor category, his eleventh nomination and third win at Golden Globes in the Best Actor Drama category, and his first BAFTA award for Best Actor.

In 1998, DiCaprio and his mother donated $35,000 for a “Leonardo DiCaprio Computer Center” at the Los Feliz branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, the web site of his childhood home. It used to be rebuilt after the 1994 Northridge earthquake and opened in early 1999. During the filming of Blood Diamond, DiCaprio worked with 24 orphaned youth from the SOS Children’s Village in Maputo, Mozambique, and was said to be extraordinarily touched with the aid of his interactions with the children.

In 2016, DiCaprio recommended Hillary Clinton for the 2016 presidential election.
