Justin Gaethje Biography

Justin Gaethje is an American professional mixed martial artist. He fights in the Lightweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Justin is best known for his aggressive fighting style and ability to take damage. He is ranked #7 in the official UFC lightweight rankings as of December 18, 2018.
He started  wrestling when he was 4 years old. At Safford High School he was a two-time Arizona state champion as a wrestler and a NCAA Division I All-American wrestler during his time at the University of Northern Colorado. Justin started his amateur MMA career while in college.  In 2011 he turned professional and joined the World Series of Fighting (WSOF) in 2013, where he became Lightweight Champion. Justin defended his WSOF belt five times before vacating it to join the UFC in 2017

Gaethje was born in Safford, Arizona. He is the son of Carolina (née Espinoza) who is of Mexican descent and  John Ray Gaethje who is of German descent.  Justin’s mother was a postmaster while his father was a copper miner, as were both of his grandfathers. Justin’s paternal grandfather boxed while in the Army. Justin has a twin brother known as Marcus John Gaethje, who has worked at the Morenci Mine since he was 18.  Outside of MMA, Justin once spent a summer working at the Morenci Mine, and holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Services.

Justin announced on May 4, 2017 that he had vacated his WSOF title and signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.  On May 12 2017 it was announced that he would make his debut against Michael Johnson on July 7, at The Ultimate Fighter: Redemption Finale. Justin won the back-and-forth fight via TKO in the second round through a combination of punches and knees.  This win earned him the Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night bonus awards.  This fight was named by Sherdog as the best fight of 2017, and round 2 of the fight as the best round of the year.
The UFC announced on July 13, 2017,that Justin would coach The Ultimate Fighter 26 along with Eddie Alvarez, with the two expected to face each other at the conclusion of the season. The bout with Alvarez took place at UFC 218 on December 2, 2017.  Justin  lost the fight by TKO in the third round, the first loss of his MMA career. This fight also earned him his second consecutive Fight of the Night bonus award.
On April 14, 2018 Justin lost via TKO to Dustin Poirier  at UFC on Fox 29. The fight earned Justin’s third consecutive Fight of the Night bonus award.
Justin on August 25, 2018 he was scheduled to fight Al Iaquinta at UFC Fight Night 135. However,  Iaquinta withdrew from the bout on June 28, 2018 and he was replaced by James Vick.  Justin won the fight by knockout in the first round.  He was also awarded a Performance of Night award, which was the fifth consecutive bonus award in his fourth fight in UFC.
