Rams’ Johnny Hekker sets Super Bowl record with 65-yard punt
Published: Feb. 3, 2019
In a Super Bowl devoid of offense for the first three quarters, it seems somewhat appropriate to have a record-setting 65-yard punt.
All-Pro punter Johnny Hekker got the Los Angeles Rams out of the shadow of their own goal line with a boomer out of his own end zone that was downed on the Patriots’ 29-yard-line.
It was Hekker’s eighth punt of the game … on the Rams’ eighth possession.
The previous record for the longest punt in Super Bowl history was 64 yards by Ryan Allen of the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX.
At the time of Hekker’s big boot, the Patriots led the Rams 3-0.
Perhaps boosted by Hekker’s heroics, the Rams scored on their next possession thanks to another long kick. Greg Zeuerlein’s 53-yard field goal to tie the game 3-3 was the second-longest in Super Bowl history.
