Joe Morelle Debate

“I frankly am disappointed,” continued Morelle, 61. “And I think he is probably ashamed of it.”

To the contrary, Maxwell said it was Morelle who should have trouble sleeping at night.

The hot-button issue was Maxwell’s latest ad, which lambastes Morelle’s past relationship with disgraced Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, and his initial response to a sexual assault allegation lodged against a top aide to the then-Assembly speaker in 2001. Morelle has since apologized, calling his comment “insensitive.”

The two met for their second televised debate in a week, this one sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Rochester Metropolitan Area and WROC-TV (Channel 8).

Voters on Tuesday will be asked to vote first for who should finish Slaughter’s unexpired term through year’s end, then a second time for who should serve the next full, two-year term. New York’s 25th District lies entirely within Monroe County and encompasses all of Rochester, and leans heavily Democratic.

Here are five takeaways from the hourlong debate: Should Social Security and Medicare be cut to rein in the deficit?
Neither supported reductions, with Maxwell taking the position that tax cuts have spurred the economy, and that will begin to bring down the deficit.

Maxwell said that “perhaps extending the age of eligibility in the future is one issue to look at.” But also there is an “opportunity in the defense department to make significant cuts,” he said.

Morelle argued for a progressive tax that would remove the cap on wages subject to FICA taxes.

What to do about the migrant caravan and immigration?
“I don’t think we can let these people in. You cannot allow people to barge their way into the United States illegally,” Maxwell said, adding later: “Now, I agree sending troops may be a little bit over the top. But it has to be clearly stated these people cannot walk their way into the United States.”

Both Maxwell and Morelle stressed the need for immigration reform, and for secure borders. Critics of President Donald Trump’s action have noted that the migrants have a legal right to seek asylum, and can do so only at the border. The perceived crisis, however, is entire of the president’s making, Morelle argued, going on to call Trump and the Republican Party “morally bankrupt. “Joe Morelle For Congress

Joe explained his decision behind running the congress campaigning and the spirit that leads him to the camping

“I am inspired by the promise of a future that is as strong, as resilient, and as bold as the people who call this great community home. I believe that, together, we can pick up Louise Slaughter’s mantle and fight to protect the fundamental ideas we all share: the need to ensure universal healthcare for all; to protect a woman’s right to choose; to keep our streets and children safe from the terror of gun violence; to create stronger economic opportunities for our working families; to fight against the opioid epidemic plaguing communities across our nation; and to dismantle the racial inequities that keep us all from achieving our full potential.

We need real leaders in Congress who are going to stand up and fight for the hardworking men and women in our community and ensure that our upstate values have a strong, unrelenting voice in Washington. With your help and support, we can build a brighter future for our community and all the people who call this great nation home.

I was born and raised in Upstate New York and I have lived in the same Irondequoit neighborhood for most of my life. My father was a veteran of the Korean War and a lifetime member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters’ Union. Both he and my mother believed, with every ounce of their beings, in the value of hard work and the principles of honesty and integrity. These are values and lessons they instilled in me at a young age and they are values which drove my pursuit of a career in public service. From Monroe County Legislature to the State Assembly, I am proud to have spent three decades serving this community that I love dearly.

I care deeply about the future of Monroe County families and the direction of our nation. That is why I have spent my life in public service fighting to ease the burden on hardworking families, create an opportunity for our children by strengthening our economy and our education system, and ensure our neighborhoods are safer and stronger than ever before.

There is undoubtedly a great deal of work before us, but I look forward to talking to my neighbors, listening to your concerns, and putting my experience to work for this incredible community.”
