He was born in a Conservative Jewish family. He attended the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School and then attended Georgetown University.
While in Georgetown, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and served as the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Hoya.
He graduated magma cum laude. He received his J.D degree with honors from Havard Law School in 1998. He served as an editor of the Havard Law Review.

He was interviewed by The New York Times in regard to an October 5th, 2013 US. Special Operation Forces raided Tripoli, Libya. The raid led to the capture of Abu Anas Al-Libi, a terrorist target who was indicated in the 1998 United States embassy bombings in both Kenya and Tanzania.
He has also appeared as a commentator on PBS NewsHour and he was also interviewed on ABC World News with regards to both the Tripoli raid and an aborted raid in Somalia. The raid in Somalia was to capture an Al-Shabab commander, Ikrimah.
