How Jake Paul Became a Viral Star

On how he got his start:

“My dad gave my brother and me a camera to film our football games when we were 10 years old so we could see how we could get better. Then one day we decided to pick up the camera and film whatever we were doing. We were in the middle of Ohio and we had a big backyard and trampolines and four-wheelers, so we would film ourselves doing stuff. We did it for fun and we fell in love with recording our lives. Eventually, we found out about YouTube and we started posting the videos so our friends could watch them. We did it for four years because our friends thought we were funny. There wasn’t really any traction on the videos—I think the biggest one had a thousand views at the time—so we stopped posting, went to high school, kept on playing sports, and then two years later, we put the YouTube videos back up again, and it was kind of the same thing. A couple of weeks later Vine came out; I downloaded it the first day and started making six-second videos. My brother and I got into a competition on who could get more followers and we started putting in hours—I would say we were putting six hours into making a six-second video, and they were turning out really good. One of the videos we made together went viral and we both gained 5,000 followers. From that day we kept on posting content and making more viral videos. Before we knew it, we had 100,000 followers, then 500,000. People started calling and saying, ‘come to Los Angeles,’ or, ‘post this brand and I’ll give you $500.’ I was used to landscaping for $10 an hour, so I was like, ‘All right, let’s do it.’ It just kept growing from there.”

On mastering the editing process:

“Before I was able to get help, it was just me on my phone and computer, so I had to learn how to [edit]. I’m still really good at it and I actually teach the people that help me little tricks and stuff. It’s like fine art and it takes a ton of time and a little attention to detail. I’ve got awesome people that are helping me create the videos and edit them, so I’m not doing it alone [anymore].”

On his social media company, Team 10:

“We find individuals on social media that have a lot of potentials but maybe not a lot of followers, and we teach them how to make content, shoot, edit, help them produce it. Then we move them into the house [the Team 10 collaborators] all have together and we collaborate. They’ll go from thousands of followers into the millions in a matter of months. Then we help them monetize with brands and ad revenue, and touring and merchandise. There are 11 people signed under Team 10 after a year of operation. Each person on the team does a different thing. There are dancers, comedians, models, a singer. We all produce different content. We’re not managing people, we’re not agents, we’re just helping them grow from the start as artists, like a record label but not limited to music.”

On whether he prefers the business or creative side of the industry:

“I love both, I really love both. It’d be hard for me to decide which one I like better, but in the case of my company now, they go hand in hand. I think that’s what I’ve tried to create, something where I could do both versus just one.”

On how he found his voice:

“I’ve really had to define who I am and find myself as a young kid, which I think a lot of people struggle with. I think the videos have helped me do that. I’m able to live my life and find out what I truly love, which is filming and doing adrenaline [rush] stuff and hanging out with my friends. I definitely didn’t know as much about myself before I started making videos”

Jake Paul To Discontinue “Uncut” Docuseries Because It “Becomes Too Real”

In his latest video, controversial YouTuber Jake Paul announced he’s discontinuing his behind-the-scenes docuseries Jake Paul Uncut but says he wants to find a way to be “more real” with his fanbase going forward.

“This YouTube space and this YouTube world we live in is so crazy. It’s so fast-paced, and it can suck you dry as a person before you even realize it,” he says, speaking one-on-one to the camera.

It’s a rare, quiet format for the contentious YouTuber, who’s primarily known for his havoc-wreaking stunts and for spending a lot of his videos shouting at his 18 million subscribers to “buy dat merch.” (That said, it’s worth noting this video has eight ad breaks and lower-third popups every so often directing viewers to Paul’s shop).

“What I’ve realized is that I need to connect more with you guys and be more open,” he adds. He explains that when Jake Paul Uncut kicked off in November with an episode about his breakup with fellow YouTuber Erika Costell, it was meant to be a weekly window into his real life — a way for viewers to see a side of him they normally don’t. That included showing viewers the candid day-to-day “nightmare” of dealing with the many, many lawsuits filed against Paul and his creator collective Team 10, he says.

But after two half-hour episodes — one in November and one in December — “the Jake Paul Uncut thing became too real for a lot of the parties involved,” he explains. “A lot of the parties involved didn’t want to have that much realness or that much content about their lives out there on social media.”

Paul says he gets it. But on the other hand, “This is our lives,” he says. “We are on social media. This is who we are as people. We should be able to put it out there so other people can learn and grow from us, and see where we are emotional.”

The third episode of Jake Paul Uncut was due to drop Feb. 1, but it — and the rest of the series — has been shelved. Going forward, Paul still wants to make content that shows viewers what real life is like for him on a personal level. Doing so will involve finding people who “understand why that content can change YouTube as a platform, and understand why that content can be amazing and not just detrimental, not just ‘oh, I don’t want my life out there,’” he says.
