Wojnarowski noted the final step for Thomas will be playing in five-on-five scrimmages. Thomas had not played since last March with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was shut down for the final 11 games of the 2017-18 season after having undergone arthroscopic hip surgery with an estimated recovery time of four months.

The same hip Thomas originally injured with the Boston Celtics during the 2017 playoffs. He finished his last season averaging 15.2 points and shot a career-worst 37.3 percent in 32 games for the Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers. The Nuggets had signed Thomas to a one-year deal worth $2 million in July. The 29-year-old will add another scoring presence to a team that ranks second in the Western Conference with a 30-14 record.

Isaiah Thomas Return

Thomas will be making his debut with the Denver Nuggets prior to the mid-February All-Star break, league sources told ESPN. He has been gathering momentum in his rehabilitation process from hip surgery in March, and there’s he has hope among him and the Nuggets organization that he could return as soon as a Feb. An 11-13 homestand against Miami and Sacramento, sources said.

He has a strong There’s strong confidence that he will be getting back no later than the first game after the All-Star break on Feb. 22 in Dallas, league sources said. The final hurdle for Thomas had remained playing full 5-on-5 scrimmages. He is expected to start that process soon.

He had signed a one-year deal with Denver in July. Thomas will be getting back to the Nuggets team that entered Friday within a half-game of first-place Golden State in the West, and employing a bevy of talented guards, including Jamal Murray, Gary Harris, Malik Beasley, Will Barton, and Monte Morris.

He’s averaged 28.9 points per game for the Boston Celtics in 2016-17, a second-team All-NBA season that appeared to be clearing the way for a long-term, $100 million contracts. his injury to the same right hip that cut short his playoffs in 2017, had cost him eight months of rehab and led to a trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the summer of 2017, upended his hopes for that kind of long-term deal. He had joined the Los Angeles Lakers as part of a trade-deadline deal last season with Cleveland, where he had played only 15 games in 2017-18.

Isaiah Thomas Contract

Thoms spend more than 10 days on the market, watching his counterparts get scooped up by teams left and right, Thomas signed a one-year deal at the veteran’s minimum with the Denver Nuggets, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Thomas got to had disappointing seasons of his pro career, one in which he was traded by the Boston Celtics to the Cleveland Cavaliers, then flipped by the Cavaliers to the Los Angeles Lakers. The trades were a result of his struggles to rebound from a debilitating hip injury that cost him the first half of the 2017-18 season. It could not have been the year Thomas envisioned after averaging 28.9 points per game and finishing as a dark horse MVP candidate in Boston in 2017.

His projects to be the backup point guard behind Jamal Murray and if healthy, he can contribute immediately to a Nuggets team that fell just short of the playoff picture in the Western Conference last season. He joins a talented team that also includes Gary Harris, Paul Millsap, and Nikola Jokic, who recently inked a five-year, $158 million max contract extension.

The deal, though, is humbling for Thomas, who proclaimed he deserved a max contract in August of 2017. His veteran’s minimum contract is worth just over $2.2 million. If IT plays like the All-Star he was, though, this deal could be the stepping stone to a bigger contract next summer.

Nuggets’ Isaiah Thomas: Recovery timeline murky

Thomas (hip) is listed as out for Saturday’s game against the Hornets, T.J. McBride of MileHighSports.com reports.

Just over a month ago, Thomas noted that he was hopeful to make his Nuggets debut in December, but January has since arrived and there have been scant updates on Thomas’ recovery from right hip surgery. Until reports emerge that Thomas is regularly taking part in full-court, full-contact practice, he’ll remain with an ambiguous timeline for a return. Monte Morris’ role as the Nuggets’ backup point guard looks fairly secure both in the short and long term.
