Ice Cube Biography

Ice Cube,an American rapper and actor was born O’shea Jackson in Baldwin Hills,South Central Los Angeles on June 15 1969.

He is the son to one Doris Jackson who worked as a hospital clerk and Hosea Jackson who was a groundskeeper at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Ice Cube developed an interest in hip hop music and began writing raps in Los Angeles George Washington Preparatory High School’s typewriting class.The rapper wrote his first rap song in the ninth grade after a friend, whom he names Kiddo, challenged him to write a song during a typewriting class.

Later he attended William Howard Taft High School in Woodland Hills, California after which he enrolled at the Phoenix Institute of Technology in the fall of 1987 in Arizona.

Ice Cube Music Career

Since ninth grade,Ice Cube had been writing rap songs and it was at the age of 16 that he sold his first song to future N.W.A member,Eazy E.He then with the help of a friend formed the C.I.A(Cru’ in Action) and they used to perform to parties hosted by Dr.Dre who soon entered the recording industry as a member of the World Class Wreckin’ Cru.Andre Romelle Young, better known as Dr. Dre saw Ice cubes potential as a writer and decided to assist him.

Dre and Ice cube teamed up with a small crew of other young rappers :DJ Yella, Eazy-E and MC Ren and went ahead to form N.W.A.The group then released the album, Straight Outta Compton in 1988.The album led to the rise of the young men to fame as it featured the hit song,’F*** tha police’.Ice Cube wrote the lyrics to approximately half of the album Straight Outta Compton.

Even after writing half of the album,he was only paid $32,000 and his contract did not confirm that he was an official member of N.W.A. This led Ice Cube to leave the group and bring a private lawsuit against Jerry Heller, which was later settled out of court.

After leaving the group,he recorded his debut solo album, ‘AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted’, in New York and it  was released in May 1990  where it became an instant hit.Around the same time he also started  his movie career with a highly praised performance in the film, Boyz n the Hood released in 1992. He went on to major roles in several other successful films including Friday in 1995, Three Kings in 1999 and Barbershop in 2002.

In the year 1994, he had reunited with former N.W.A member Dr. Dre, who was now part of Death Row Records, in their duet ‘Natural Born Killaz’ and in 1998 he released his long-awaited fifth solo album, War & Peace Vol. 1.

Ice Cube released his seventh solo album, Laugh Now, Cry Later in 2006, on his Lench Mob Records label, debuting at number four on the Billboard Charts and selling 144,000 units in the first week.

On September 28, 2010, he released his ninth solo album, I Am the West. The album featured the hit single ‘I Rep That West’ ,debuted at No.22 on the Billboard200 and sold 22,000 copies in its first week.The album was released independently under his label Lench Mob.

Ice Cube stated that ‘Everythang’s Corrupt’,his 11th album would be pushed back again, because he was focused on completing Straight Outta Compton. In October 2016, Billboard reported that the album would be released in 2017.

The real lineup formed in 1986 consisted of Arabian Prince, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and Ice Cube. DJ Yella and MC Ren joined later, with Arabian Prince eventually leaving shortly before the official release of Straight Outta Compton, which came out in 1988, and Ice Cube following suit in December 1989. Eazy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren and Dr. Dre would later become platinum-selling solo artists in the 1990s. Their debut album Straight Outta Compton marked the beginning of the new gangsta rap era as the production and social commentary in their lyrics were revolutionary within the genre. NWA’s second album Niggaz4Life would be the first hardcore rap album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 sales charts. Rolling Stone ranked N.W.A number 83 on their list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”. In 2016, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, following three previous nominations.
