Forrest Sawyer Biography

Forrest Sawyer is an American broadcast journalist. Sawyer worked 11 years with ABC News. While there he frequently anchored ABC World News Tonight and Nightline and reported for all ABC News broadcasts. Forrest is a veteran war correspondent, having reported on every United States action over the past two decades.

In 1990 and 1991, he spent eight months covering the Gulf War. Not to mention, scoring numerous exclusives from Baghdad to Saudi Arabia to Iran; including reports from inside Kuwait City before coalition forces liberated it. Mr. Sawyer’s world travels include reports from the Oklahoma City terrorist attack.

It was a report from inside KGB headquarters on the Lee Harvey Oswald Soviet intelligence file, and the attempted coup of Manuel Noriega in Panama. His work has carried him throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Over the course of two decades as a national journalist, Forrest Sawyer has reported extensively on the impact of human activity on the environment. His reports have included an examination of deforestation in the Amazon; water issues in the Everglades; a weeklong Discovery Television series on increased tornado and storm activity; and several reports on climate change.

Sawyer was born on April 19, 1949, in Lakeland, Florida. He is 70 years old. There is not much known about his parents, birth family, and siblings.

He studied at the Kathleen High School and later joined the University of Florida. Sawyer earned a bachelor’s degree in Eastern Philosophy and World Religions. Moreover, He went on to do advanced studies and obtained his master’s in Education from the same university.

Forrest first started work with the local radio. While anchoring radio shows, he was invited by Georgia’s Public Television Network to host a program which was titled World in Review. The world news and events were taken and analyzed by a team of experts.

Forrest shone in this program and seeing his talent, the CBS outlet of Atlanta recruited Forrest but he continued with his radio job full-time even as he did some programs on CBS. Forrest then joined the commercial TV and was hired by WAGA-TV of Atlanta. He was with this CBS affiliate from 1980 to 1985.

In late 2007, while filming a documentary in Tanzania, Sawyer survived a helicopter crash in which he suffered a serious knee injury before hiking miles with other survivors to safety. His recent media appearances include anchoring the July 19, 2008 edition of the CBS Evening News. and reporting the 2009 Frontline documentary “Ten Trillion and Counting,” a journey through the politics behind the national debt.

His time with ABC

In 1988, Forrest migrated to the ABC Network. He was the anchor for ABC World News This Morning and also was the host of World News Sunday and Day One. He used to also have a show on Discovery Channel where he was the anchor of Justice Files. This was in the early 1990s. In 1996, he reported on the Mount Everest Disaster.

He was the first journalist to get hold of the files of Lee Harvey Oswald. Sawyer has also covered the Gulf War. Moreover, He used to also host World News Tonight and Nightline.

Forrest went on to receive several prestigious awards. He was a moderator for The Debate session of The West Wing. He was also a guest speaker at the American Association of Community Colleges Conference which was held at Long Beach, CA in 2006. In addition, He also has given a number of guest lectures at other institutes.
