Ellen DeGeneres, an American comedian, television host, actress, writer, and producer was born Ellen Lee DeGeneres on January 26, 1958, in Metairie, Louisiana.

Ellen DeGeneres, an American comedian, television host, actress, writer, and producer was born Ellen Lee DeGeneres on January 26, 1958, in Metairie, Louisiana.She is the daughter to  Betty DeGeneres , a speech therapist and Elliott Everett DeGeneres who was an insurance agent.

DeGeneres graduated from Atlanta High School in May 1976.After completing her first years of high school at Grace King High School in Metairie, Louisiana she moved back to New Orleans to attend the University of New Orleans, where she majored in communication studies.

In November 2011, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton named her a special envoy for Global AIDS Awareness. On December 3, 2011, DeGeneres opened the show at the David Lynch Foundation’s 3rd annual “Change Begins Within” gala at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to raise funds to bring Transcendental Meditation to at-risk populations suffering from epidemic levels of chronic stress and stress-related disorders. She says: “TM is the only time I have that stillness… it gives me this peaceful feeling, and I love it so much. I can’t say enough good things about it. All the benefits that you can achieve from sitting still and going within—it really is a beautiful experience. David Lynch is such a wonderful man to start this foundation to help people.”

In November 2017, it was announced that Donald Trump would begin allowing the importation of elephant trophies from Africa. DeGeneres, an animal activist, created a hashtag campaign in partnership with her brand, ED Ellen DeGeneres, to donate to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. DeGeneres also created a t-shirt with her brand whose proceeds also go to the organization.

In January 2018 for Ellen’s 60th birthday, Ellen’s wife, Portia de Rossi, gifted Ellen a permanent gorilla home in Rwanda built in her namesake for the Digit Fund. This gift was part of a new arm of the Digit Fund now called the “Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund.”

Ellen held a wide variety of jobs until she turned to stand-up comedy, making her bones at small clubs and coffeehouses before working her way up to emcee Clyde’s Comedy Club by 1981.In 1982 she entered a national talent contest held by the cable network Showtime, sending in a videotape of her stand-up act.

When DeGeneres won the contest, earning the title of “Funniest Person in America,” she went immediately from local New Orleans comic to nationally recognized up-and-coming comedian and over the next several years, she traveled around the country performing stand-up comedy, and she appeared on several HBO specials.

This led to better gigs, including her first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1986.DeGeneres then began making regular appearances on the talk show circuit, including performances on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Later with Greg Kinnear, Larry King Live, and Good Morning, America. She was also profiled in detail on ABC’s PrimeTime Live.

DeGeneres’s first regular TV role was in a short-lived Fox sitcom called Open House. She played the role of Margo Van Meter, an office worker at the Juan Verde Real Estate company. The show co-starred Alison LaPlaca and Mary Page Keller.

In 1992, producers Neal Marlens and Carol Black cast Ellen DeGeneres in their sitcom Laurie Hill, in the role of Nurse Nancy MacIntyre. The series was canceled after only four episodes, but Marlens and Black were so impressed with DeGeneres’ performance that they soon cast her in their next ABC pilot, These Friends of Mine which was later renamed Ellen in 1994.However, the show was canceled the following season due to declining ratings

Returning to television in 2003, Ellen DeGeneres became a big hit with daytime viewers with her self-titled talk show, Ellen. Since its inception, the show has won a slew of Daytime Emmy and People’s Choice Awards.In the same year DeGeneres lent her voice to the animated box office smash, Finding Nemo, in which she plays a friendly yet forgetful little blue fish named Dory. The next year she received two Emmy Award nominations for her stand-up comedy special Ellen DeGeneres: Here and Now.

For several years, DeGeneres dated actress Anne Heche and, in 1999, the couple bought a home in Los Angeles. Although at one point they publicly announced their desire to be married, the couple broke up in August 2000.

Ellen DeGeneres then dated Alexandra Hedison for a few years before becoming involved with actress Portia de Rossi in December 2004. DeGeneres married de Rossi on August 16, 2008, in what was perhaps the highest-profile gay marriage after California legalized the unions.

Her voice-over for the film ‘Finding Nemo’ earned her the ‘Saturn Award’ from the ‘Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films’ for Best Supporting Actress. She also won the ‘Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award’ and ‘Annie Award’ for the same project.

This was the first time that the ‘Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films’ has presented the acting award for a voice-over.

During the period 2004-14, she has won twenty-five ‘Emmy Awards’. She has also been the recipient of ‘Producers Guild of America Awards’ in two occasions.
