Donnie Cox Biography

Donnie Cox came to the Southeast already familiar with this part of the country. Donnie is a Tennessean having grown up near Cookeville in the Upper Cumberland.

Donnie studied meteorology at Mississippi State and holds the AMS Seal of Approval. His fascination with weather dates back to elementary school when he would draw out weather maps on the chalkboards in classrooms. In high school, Donnie earned his pilot’s license, which required quite a bit of weather study.

Prior to coming to New Bern, he spent 20 years at the CBS affiliate station in Nashville and five years at WCYB, our sister station in Bristol, Virginia.

Donnie has flown into two Category 5 Hurricanes (Mitch and Ivan) with the Hurricane Hunters. He was working in Nashville in 1998 when the tornado hit the downtown area.

Janice says when there is a thunderstorm or when the tornado siren goes off, Donnie goes to the front porch to watch instead of taking cover as he tells other people to do.

Donnie is fascinated with space exploration and space flight as well. He has covered space shuttle launches from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and watched nearly all of them on television.
