Cancer-Free Derrick Young Returns To CBS 2 Morning News

CHICAGO (CBS) — Derrick Young is back, and he’s cancer-free. The CBS 2 traffic reporter has been off the air for a few months after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer last year.

“I’m happy to say that I am completely cancer-free at this point,” Derrick said after returning to the CBS 2 Morning News on Friday.

After taking a break in November, Young had surgery to remove cancer, and his doctors informed him in December he was cancer-free.

On Friday, he was back on the job.

“I feel great, but I mean internally I’m still healing. So still dealing with that healing element, and that takes time when you have an organ taken out of your body,” he said.

While he was undergoing his cancer treatment, Derrick’s friends printed out #DYSTRONG bracelets to help lift his spirits.

“This was one of the best days of my life because I was in a really down point of my life, and they came over, and this was their show of support. So, my friends, my card-playing crew put those together, and my family all wears them,” he said.

Derrick turned 50 last year and went to the doctor for a check-up. That’s when he found out he had prostate cancer.

That’s why he’s encouraging other men to get checked out and learn more about prostate cancer.

Men at average risk for prostate cancer should start getting screenings at age 50. Those at higher risk should start the discussion at age 40 or 45. His birth date is unknown but stays ready for the update soon

Meet Derrick Young, CBS 2’s New Traffic Reporter

CHICAGO (CBS) — We have a long-awaited winner for our Traffic Tryouts contest at CBS 2.

Derrick Young will be CBS 2’s new traffic reporter. He has been spending his time in the classroom at two schools in Matteson School District 162, teaching character education. He also conducts a high school program and an after-school fitness program at Harlan Community Academy, 9652 S. Michigan Ave.

As CBS 2’s Steve Bartelstein reports, from the moment you meet Derrick, you notice his charisma and passion.
“He has a certain vibe; like when he walks into a room, you can feel it. You can feel his presence, and I love that,” said one of his students, Jasmine Bovia.

This is why Derrick’s students believe in him, and themselves.

“It made me feel good; I believe in myself,” said student Armani Griffin.

Armani is just one of many who have learned life lessons from Derrick, about education, responsibility, and character.

“I feel like I’m speaking life into those words; like I’m actually doing them instead of just reading them off of a paper,” Jasmine said.

Very little in Derrick’s classroom comes from the pages of a book; it’s more from the heart. And by leading with that heart, Derrick leads by example.

“My younger brothers and stuff – I’m role models for them because they look up to me and stuff like that,” said Mario, one of Derrick’s students.

But Derrick is also really like that. He gets a candid answer when he asks his students if any of them didn’t want to come to school one day.

“I’m trying, you know, and I think that’s what it’s all about, is an example,” Derrick said.

If it takes a village, Derrick’s village is quick to say what we saw.

“I have two daughters who are in college,” said Derrick’s sister, Rosalyn Johnson. “He tells them both, ‘Your first date will be with Uncle D, because I’m going to take you out, and I’m going to set the standard of what you should expect from every young man.”

Derrick’s students were thrilled to see him as a CBS 2 Traffic Tryouts finalists.

“I feel like the people who watch him – they’re going to be smiling for the rest of the day,” Jasmine said.

So with his new gig at CBS 2, will Derrick stay in the classroom?

“I would love to be able to do that – probably transitioning more to after-school programs, but absolutely plan to stay in the schools and do what I’m doing,” he said.

Derrick Young CBS

Representing CBS-2 this year is the one and only Derrick Young. He’s one of the morning news team there, reporting the traffic and getting all of us where we need to be; he works side by side with 2014 DWCC alum Kris Gutierrez, Erin Kennedy, and meteorologist Megan Glaros.

In addition to working as the CBS 2 traffic reporter, Derrick is a motivational speaker and professional health coach. He mentors, coaches and trains individuals on a wide range of personal development topics.

If that were not enough, he spends a lot of time in classrooms mentoring and inspiring students, focusing on programs in building life skills, character development, and fitness and health.

Derrick grew up in the Roseland community and currently lives in the South Loop. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Business Administration.

Dancing with us may have been Derrick’s destiny – He’s been involved in the fight against breast cancer and counts himself lucky to know and work with many, many survivors.

He’s also a fierce competitor and he’s always thought that he could be a pretty good dancer if only he had some instruction. We were the most excited to hear that his mom is so enthused about his participation in this event that she calls him every day to find out what he’s learned.

We know we’re lucky to have friends like Derrick who do so much in the community and help in so many ways to improve the lives of others.
