Contessa attended Sacopee Valley High School in Hiram, Maine where she graduated in 1992. She then attended Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications where she graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in Broadcast Journalism in 1996. She also received a Certificate of Contemporary Europe following her political studies in Strasbourg, France.

In September 2003, Contessa joined MSNBC prior to which she was working for WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as a weekend anchor and also a general assignment reporter. From 1997 to 1999, she worked for KMIR-TV in Palm Springs, California.

She served briefly as a news reader in spring 2005 on the Imus in the Morning radio show, which was syndicated nationally.
