Asieh Namdar Biography

Asieh Namdar is an Iranian American anchor for CGTN America in Washington, D.C. She is widely known for her appearance in CCTV AMERICA. Asieh has worked for CNN news for more than 20 years, where she served as an anchor for CNNI, a senior writer for HLN, and a contributor to CNN.com.

Namdar has written and reported on many international stories, including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the tsunami disaster in Asia, the contested 2009 elections and protests in Iran, and Typhoon Haiyan as it hit the Philippines in 2013. In 2004, after a deadly earthquake, she traveled to the ancient city of Bam in Iran for a humanitarian mission. It was her first trip to her native Iran since she left at age 12. Asieh has been recognized by numerous Iranian-American organizations for her work. Recently, she spoke one-on-one with Iran’s foreign minister, Javad Zarif, on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

Her career in reporting industry started when she joined CNN in 1989 working as a video journalist. She worked for CNN for 25 years, as a contributor and senior writer of HLN and currently serves as a lead anchor for CGTN America in  D.C. Previously, Namdar anchored, wrote and produced a daily HLN segment called “The Global Minute,” which provided quick updates on news and features from around the world. Namdar also served on CNN International as a host for the CNN World Report. She joined CNN in 1989 and is based in Atlanta’s world headquarters network.

During her tenure at CNN, Namdar reported on numerous stories and events, including the Middle East conflict, the civil war in Northern Uganda, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the attacks in Mumbai. She also reported extensively on the Asian tsunami disaster and the earthquake in Bam’s ancient Iranian city. In 2004, she traveled to Bam with a team of American doctors to provide relief to survivors.

Namdar also interviewed various world leaders and newsmakers, including former U.S. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi. President Jimmy Carter, Queen Rania of Jordan, Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, and best-selling author Azar Nafisi. Namdar has been recognized for her work by numerous Iranian-American organizations. She is originally from Iran and speaks Farsi fluently.
