A church in Laconia that parishioners said has been an important part of thousands of lives for decades is set to be demolished. A group of local civic leaders, parishioners, and residents is trying to save St. Joseph’s Church.

“These buildings tell the story of our past, and when we knock them all down, how many more stories are we going to have left to tell?” said resident Tara Shore. The parish is being consolidated and the school is being moved as part of a sale, but Shore said that’s not the focus of the group’s efforts. The group wants to see the land designated a historic district to keep the 1929 structure from being destroyed.

“What we’re really trying to accomplish is historic preservation,” Shore said. “The city has numerous historically significant buildings.” Those who are working to get the area designated a historic district said that, even if they’re successful, there’s no guarantee the church will be saved. The diocese said in a statement it can’t be sure that the structure would be used for an acceptable purpose.

City Councilor Mark Haynes, a 70-year parishioner at St. Joseph’s Church, said he thinks the building has value. “I think the building has a lot of memories to a lot of people, my family included, and the fact that the church is decommissioned, the building is still there and the memories are still there,” Haynes said. Those working to save the building said they want to talk with the diocese to see if there is another solution.
