Experts are predicting that 2019 may be the year of the tick. In our region, tick nymphs will be hatching over the next several weeks. These poppy seed-sized ticks are more dangerous than their adult relatives because they can bite and remain virtually undetected. Adding to the alarm is news from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that seven new tick germs have now been identified. NBC 5’s Alice Kang recently reported on tick hunters from the Vermont Agency of Agriculture.

Their mission – to locate prime tick habitats, taking note of fluctuations in population and in pathogens. To lessen your chances of being bitten, wear long-sleeved shirts and tuck your pants into your socks. Use a tick repellent containing DEET. If you do find a tick on your body, remove it with a slow, steady pull and wash the area with soap and water. Now that the temperatures are finally warming up, get outside and enjoy it. With some extra vigilance, you’ll stay tick-free and healthy.
