Alfre Woodard Biography

Alfre Woodard is an American film, stage, and television actress, producer, and political activist who began her acting career in theater. She is a Golden Globe Award winner, three times Screen Actors Guild Awards winner, four times Emmy Award winner having been nominated 18 times and a nominee of an Academy Award and Grammy Award.

Woodard made her debut in film in Remember My Name (1978) after a breakthrough role in a Off-Broadway play ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf’ (1977). She has appeared in many films over the years like ‘How to Make an American Quilt’ (1995), Passion Fish (1992), the HBO film Miss Evers’ Boys (1997), K-PAX (2001), The Core (2003) among others.

She also appeared in the ABC comedy-drama series Desperate Housewives as Betty Applewhite and in the films The Family That Preys (2008), 12 Years a Slave (2013) and Annabelle (2014).

As a political activist, Woodard is the founder of an organization devoted to advancing democracy and equality in South Africa – Artists for a New South Africa. She is a board member of AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences).

Woodard was born and raised in a family of three and she is the youngest. Her parents, Constance, a homemaker, and Marion H. Woodard, an entrepreneur and interior designer, brought up their children in Tulsa. She has two older siblings.

Woodard went through high school in Bishop Kelley High School, a private Catholic school in Tulsa where she was a cheerleader and graduated from the school in 1970. She then joined Boston University to study drama and later on graduated from the institution.

Woodard is married to writer Roderick Spencer since 1983. They do not have children of their own but have two adopted children. Spencer is known his works like ‘You Got That Right’, for Mississippi public TV and ‘Juanita’ starring his wife Woodard. ‘Juanita’ will premiere in March 2019 on Netflix.

Together, they own Miss Maglashan Productions, Inc. and he is a co-founder of Artists for a New South Africa(Formerly Artists for a Free South Africa). The couple lives in Santa Monica, California.

Luke Cage is a Marvel web TV series that is based on a comics character of the same name. It was released on 30 September 2016 and aired for two seasons till June 22, 2018. Netflix canceled the series on October 19, 2018 as a result of creative differences with the series’ writers during the development of a third season.

Alfre Woodard appears in the Netflix web series on a starring role as Mariah Dillard, an enemy of Luke Cage and Tilda Johnson’s (played by Gabrielle Dennis) mother.
